MONTHLY HIGHLIGHTS: February: We really enjoyed participating in the Young American's Workshop and evening performance this month. We also celebrated Valentine's Day by trading "Valentine Bags" with our classmates. We completed our MAPS testing in reading, language arts, math and science.
January: This month we read the classic novel Charlotte's Web and enjoyed making lap books to reinforce reading skills alligned with Nebraska LA Standards. We also celebrated 100 Days of School on Friday, January 20th. Students crafted a "Creation" made out of 100 like items...we have some very creative minds! You can view some photos under "Our Photos" tab.
December: On December 7th, the 3rd and 4th grade students were awarded with a trip to the Big Apple in Kearney for their hard work and dedication to MAPS. Congratulations to the K-4 students, Mrs. Witt, and Ms. Hangen for putting on a wonderful Christmas program. First semester ends December 22. Second quarter progress reports will be sent home the first week in January. Nineteen students earned their AR points this month and attended our AR celebration.
NOVEMBER Happy Thanksgiving!! This month's highlights included participation in a Veteran's Day program, November 11th, honoring our veterans. IT'S GETTING COLD!! Please make sure your child comes dressed to school in appropriate cold weather clothing. This includes a coat, hat, and mittens (when necessary). Please remember recess is held outside on most days.
OCTOBER We've had a very busy month! :) We celebrated Fire Prevention week by making a poster for our hallway and listening to an interesting presentation from our local firemen. Homecoming week was celebrated Oct. 12-16th and Red Ribbon Week Oct. 26-30th. On Friday, Oct. 31st, we had "game day" to celebrate our "AR" readers who earned their 10 points and enjoyed wearing our Halloween costumes and parading through the hallways at CPS. SEPTEMBER Our school year is off to a great start!! We've been super busy learning a lot of new things this year. We just finished our first unit in reading and grammar. We learned a lot about realism and fantasy, sequence of events, types of sentences, and continue working on parts of speech. Students are finishing writing their first narrative about a special person or pet in their lives. We had 21 students celebrate reading by earning at least 10 AR points. These students were rewarded with a fun trip to the park for lunch, playing frisbee golf, and then a stop at Shirley K's for a yummy treat! We're making great progress in third grade!! :)
We have had a great first two weeks of school in third grade!! I think everyone is beginning to feel very welcome and comfortable as we begin to learn classroom routines & expectations. Students are looking forward to starting independent Reading Centers next week. We will follow the Daily 5, which include word work, fluency, comprehension, skills work and work on writing. :)
Elementary Open House will be held on Tuesday, August 13th at 6:00pm. Parents and students are encouraged to attend in order to meet your teachers and take a look at our facility and classrooms. Don't forget to bring your school supplies with you that evening. I am looking forward to meeting 22 third graders and sharing a fun & exciting school year!
